Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) the operator and manager of Bahrain International Airport (BIA) has revealed that it has recycled more than 1.2 tonnes of plastic in 2018, in line with the government’s efforts to manage plastic waste pollution in the kingdom.
According to the Bahrain News Agency, BAC’s waste management scheme covers, prevention, reuse, recycle, recover, and disposal of plastic waste. With this move, BAC’s team members will separate office waste and dispose it in marked bins across its headquarters.
Speaking about the initiative, chief executive officer of BAC, Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah said: “BAC endeavors to live up to its environmental obligations and sustainability practices starting with its internal operations across the organisation.

BAC also supports the Kingdom’s National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP) that is set by the Sustainable Energy Unit Authority. As a member of the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific Regional Environment Committee, BAC is engaged in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme by ACI to ensure that BIA’s carbon footprint is closely monitored.
In 2019, BAC formed an Energy & Water Committee to analyse energy and water consumption across BIA’s operations and set new reduction targets.
July this year saw Bahrain pass regulations banning single-use plastic bags and the import of non-biodegradable bags, with the products to be permanently banned in select malls and supermarkets across the kingdom.
